Anthony "Coach Tony" Mauro has been a resident of Southington since he was a small boy. After graduating from SHS, where baseball was his sport of choice, Tony left for the US Army, graduating from Infantry leadership school and serving his tour of duty in Germany. Upon his return from military service, Tony settled back into Southington, married his teenage sweetheart Sylvia, took a job at Pratt & Whitney and raised their 3 children, all of whom played youth sports for the Town of Southington and then moved to varsity competition for SHS.  During his children's growing years, Coach Tony volunteered for coaching, field development, and the Board of Directors for the Southington Baseball leagues from the Little League program through the adoption of Babe Ruth baseball.  In 1972, Coach Tony was awarded the Baseball Citation from the Town of Southington for his outstanding achievement and dedication to Southington Baseball.  About the time Tony turned the reins of baseball to the next generation of parents, Tennis evolved from a hobby to a strong passion.  Often seen hitting at Rec Park against the backboard before his opponent arrived, Tony began taking lessons at the local club, began playing men's and mixed doubles on the Clubs travel team and entered the local tournaments.  Upon retiring from Pratt & Whitney, Coach Tony decided to resurrect the dormant youth tennis program in Town. In the first year, Coach Tony's volunteer staff taught 40 children at the Rec, ranging in ages from 4 to 16. (In the summer of 2011, more than 350 players learned to hit and play the game on the beautiful courts of SHS.) In 2004, the Southington Town Council gave Coach Tony a citation for 30 years of dedication to Southington sports and innovation in teaching tennis. In 2006, at the age of 74, Coach Tony was tapped on the shoulder to coach SHS Boys Tennis, all with the hope there would be enough players to field a team.  A Blue Knight deep in his heart, Coach Tony took on the challenge, and for the past five years has tirelessly dedicated his time and energy years toward the overall development of his players, teaching leadership, independent thinking, overcoming obstacles, keeping your commitments, teamwork and a strong sense of fair play - along with a few pointers on how to hit the ball.  Coach Tony must be doing something right....for the 5th straight year, the SHS Boys Tennis Team have had a winning record of 60 – 26 and earned a ride to the State Tournament. Go Knights!
